harry potter advertising

There are many ways to draw in a mass audience for a new movie. the poster above was just one of the ways in which the makers of Harry Potter captured their audience.
This poster is for part one of the last ever Harry Potter film and uses the main character in the centre to emphasise how main he really is and so that people will see his face first and instantly recognise the film because it is so well known. This is also why the character has been placed over the majority of the film title because the style in which the title is written and the face of the character are instantly recognisable by people and so the actual name is already in their minds without having to read it off the poster.
The whole poster is very dark and mysterious to suggest that the film itself is going to be dark and mysterious. the only light is coming from behind the main characters head, which also casts a shadow on the front of his face, adding to the darkness and mystery.
The character is also holding what looks like a 'snitch', which would only be known to people that have watched the films and are therefore Harry Potter fans. The fact that this is being held in the main characters hand can tell us that it probably features in the film and that the poster is mainly aimed at Harry Potter fans or people that have seen the first six films. This could also tell us that this film is not be watched by anyone who hasn't seen any of the other films as it is a follow on to the others.
The mysterious side of this poster continues underneath the character hands with the quote, "I open at the close". The colouring of this quote is similar to the 'snitch' in the characters hand, which would suggest that these two things are linked in some way but the audience will have to find out by going and watching the film.
